Jack London District, 2nd St. Brush to Jefferson Landscape
Project Proposal
Oakland, Ca., 94607

Oakland’s Jack London District is the most rapidly developing neighborhood in Alameda County. With the addition of several hundred new Lofts and Condos, and the new Jack London Market Hall opening in the Fall of 2009, the Area continues to expand and improve. While the majority of recent development is concentrated East of Broadway, the neighborhood West of Broadway is also experiencing a revival. It is here on 2nd Street, between Brush and Jefferson that further improvements are needed in the way of trees and sidewalks. The West End of the Jack London District is home to several retailers, including Cost Plus Market, Bed Bath and Beyond, Marcus Supply Hardware, Sincere Hardware, Saf-Keep Storage, Extra Space Storage and 365 Main, among others. In addition, the West End of the Jack London neighborhood has several residential buildings, including the Phoenix Lofts, one of the earliest Loft developments of the Jack London District neighborhood. Visitors to the area find 2nd Street between Brush and Clay a safe and convenient place to park while shopping, dining, or seeing a show at the famous Yoshi’s Jazz Club or Regal Jack London Cinema. Finally, the West end of the Jack London District serves as a gateway to the Jack London neighborhood itself, with many visitors traveling from Berkeley and Emeryville by way of the newly developed Mandela Parkway, or through the “Maze” or Bay Bridge, taking the Broadway Exit of the Southbound 880. Both of these paths inevitably take visitors down 2nd St., past the PG&E substation, and into the heart of the Jack London District.
